In 1987 Jenny was awarded a Scholarship to attend the Royal Academy of Music to study with Mary Thomas. Whilst at the Academy she won the Ernest Butcher Prize for singing and in 1992 was awarded the Benjamin J. Dale Award. In the same year Jenny won the soprano category in the Great Grimsby International Singers Competition, which gained her the Alec Redshaw Memorial Award. In 1994 she won the Wessex Classics Soloist Competition. Jenny now studies with Michelle Wegwart and has a busy and varied performing career. Engagements have included Mozart’s C Minor Mass in Canterbury Cathedral with the Bournemouth Sinfonietta conducted by David Hill, Mendelssohn’s Elijah conducted by Laszlo Heltay, Bach’s Christmas Oratorio in Oslo Cathedral (Broadcast on Norwegian Radio), a tour to Spain to sing with the Orquesta Sinfonica del Principado de Asturias and Exsultate Jubilate conducted by John Lubbock at St. John’s, Smith Square with the orchestra of St. John’s. Other engagements of note include Messiah and Carmina Burana at the Royal Albert Hall conducted by Sir David Willcocks, Gounod’s St. Cecilia Mass and Fauré’s Requiem at the Royal Festival Hall with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Carmina Burana with Laszlo Heltay and the B.B.C. Philharmonic Orchestra and also with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and Mahler 4 and a recital of Grieg songs at the Symphony Hall Birmingham. Jenny recently completed a tour of Four Seasons by Candlelight with the Mozart Festival Orchestra conducted by Ian Watson. Operatic successes include Susanna (The Marriage of Figaro, Mozart) for The Opera Company, Palace Opera & Opera Brava, Zerlina (Don Giovanni, Mozart) for Opera East, Nanetta (Falstaff, Verdi) and Sandman & Dew Fairy (Hansel & Gretel, Humperdinck) both for Palace Opera at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, various roles in The Fairy Queen (Purcell) for the English Bach Festival Trust at the Athens Festival and also the Perelada Festival, Oscar (A Masked Ball, Verdi) and Mimi (La Boheme, Puccini) both for Kentish Opera, Despina (Cosi fan Tutte, Mozart) for Country Opera and Papagena (The Magic Flute, Mozart) for Opera Factory and Opera Interludes. Roles in contemporary opera have included Voluptua (La Pizza con Funghi, Seymour Barab), The Girl (The Waiter’s Revenge. Stephen Oliver) and Geraldine (A Hand of Bridge, Samuel Barber) for Jigsaw Music Theatre and Mrs. Naidoo (Satyagraha, Philip Glass) with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields at the Royal Festival Hall. Jenny made her Covent Garden Opera House debut as 2nd Woman in the English Bach Festival Trust’s performance of Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas. Other engagements have included Handel’s Messiah with Brian Kay, Mendelssohn’s Elijah with the Bristol Bach Choir and Mozart’s C Minor Mass at the Royal Festival Hall with the Bach Choir. Also Norina (Don Pasquale, Donizetti), Adele (Die Fledermaus, Strauss) and Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro, Mozart) for Pavilion Opera, a tour to Lithuania to sing Judas Maccabaeus with Nicholas McGegan, Four Seasons by Candlelight with the Mozart Festival Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall and at the Barbican and Messiah at St. John’s, Smith Square. Also Sandrina in La Finta Giardiniera (Mozart) for NCO, Mozart Requiem with the Midland Festival Chorus and Haydn Nelson Mass with the CBSO. | |
